['Cryptocurrency Is An Abject Disaster' (or How Mining Is Hitting Free CI Services)](https://drewdevault.com/2021/04/26/Cryptocurrency-is-a-disaster.html) — The author runs [sourcehut](https://sourcehut.org/), an open source forge, and has had to limit its free CI service to paid users only due to cryptocurrency miners abusing the service. LayerCI has also written about how [crypto miners are killing free CI](https://layerci.com/blog/crypto-miners-are-killing-free-ci/), and GitHub Actions has [been experiencing problems too.](https://github.blog/2021-04-22-github-actions-update-helping-maintainers-combat-bad-actors/) Love or hate it, crypto is certainly exposing many negative externalities and unveiling some challenges to infrastructure providers.

[Ten Best Practices for Remote Software Engineering](https://cacm.acm.org/opinion/articles/252174-the-10-best-practices-for-remote-software-engineering/fulltext) — A lot of developers have been getting used to a ‘new normal’ over the past year with remote working going from a niche approach to mainstream. This is a pretty high level list of ‘best practices’ but it triggered an interesting [Hacker News discussion](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26944628) covering things like coping with remote working with ADHD and working asynchronously.

- Slashdata, a UK based developer research firm, says [JavaScript is the most popular programming language](https://www.zdnet.com/article/programming-languages-javascript-has-most-developers-but-rust-is-the-fastest-growing/) with an estimated 12.4 million developers. Python is the fastest growing in an absolute sense, though, with Rust and Lua fastest growing relative to their smaller bases.
